Mahtomedi Students Sort Out Savings
Students at Mahtomedi’s O.H. Anderson Elementary School are saving money, energy, and the environment by sorting their lunchroom trash. The lunchroom now has separate bins for compostable food and paper, liquids, recyclables, and trash.
By sorting their leftover food and trash into different bins, students have reduced the number of 55-gallon trash bins they generate each day from eight or nine to less than one. They are keeping useful materials from going to the landfill while helping reduce the district’s costs for trash pickup. The program will soon start at Wildwood Elementary and Mahtomedi Middle and High Schools.
