Anika Liner Wins 2021 Scholarship
The recipient of the 2021 MAGI/Wildwood Lions Environmental Leadership Award was announced May 12 at the Mahtomedi High School Awards night.
This year’s winner, Anika Liner, has an outstanding academic record and an impressive variety of extracurricular activities, many of which show her commitment to environmental issues. She has been an active member of the Eco Club all four years of high school, and president two of those years.
Among other things, Anika led the club in several large projects, including a Zero Impact Week to foster excitement about sustainable living, Adopt a Storm Drain project to highlight water quality issues, and the Trash Boat Project. Annika organized teams of students to collect thousands of plastic bottles from the school’s recycling. The students assembled the bottles into a boat to be paddled across White Bear Lake to bring awareness of plastic consumption and waste. She has also been involved in efforts to improve habitat for wildlife on school grounds including, replace a bat house, create a butterfly garden, and clear invasive buckthorn.
Outside of school, Anika participated in Youth in Government. In the youth legislature, she helped pass a bill into “law” that would ban sulfide mining in Minnesota.
In the fall, Anika will be attending American University pursuing a degree in Snvironmental Studies with a focus on law and policy.
Congratulations Anika!
